OH Bounty Hunter Questions

Tony A.
Cleveland, Ohio

I live in Ohio. I have a few questions if you can answer them or direct me into the right direction to find them.
1. Can Bounty Hunters in Ohio legally carey a weapon w/o a permit?
2. Can Bounty Hunters in Ohio legally enter a suspect's own residence to arrest them?
3. Can Bounty Hunters in Ohio legally enter w/ force a residence that the suspect doesnt live at if he/she is known to be there?
4. What if any type of insurance is needed for a bounty hunter in Ohio?
5. Is there a bounty hunter liscence needed in Ohio.

Tony,

We are not attorneys- as such we cannot answer some of the legal questions for which you need answers. I would suggest that your first point of contact be the licensing agencies (Yes, a license is required in OH) that regulate bail recovery.

1) Carry without a permit? Unlikely. Licensed or not we are private citizens and as such must follow all laws in the state in which we work.

2) Consult with your licensing entity (more than likely not without an occupant's permission)

3) Same as #2 (I've had to work with these types of situations for 8 years and it is rarely an issue when the occupant understands that they are "hindering arrest and prosecution" or "harboring a fugitive" and that there are criminal consequences for doing so.

4) PI Licensing probably will require a Professional Liability insurance policy.

5. Yes, in Ohio you must be either a licensed private investigator or bail agent-
each has its own set of requirements. More information regarding licensing
can be found at:

For Bail Recovery Agents- the Ohio Department of Insurance

For Private Investigator licensing- Department of Commerce, Real Estate and
Professional Licensing Division

Hope this helps you in your search!

Warmest Regards,
